IOWA CITY -- It was Senior Day at Kinnick Stadium, and unfortunately they did not leave with a win, as the Hawkeyes fell to Michigan State, 37-21.
The Spartans snapped a seven-game losing streak in Iowa City dating back to 1989. The win has put Michigan State in the lead for the Legends division race. The Spartans took a commanding 31-7 lead late in the first half.
James Vandenberg threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns for Iowa. The loss was Iowa's first loss at Kinnick this year.

THE GAZETTE.COM PICK ‘EMS
Week 11
Michigan State at Iowa
Marc Morehouse - The Grumpy Middle-Aged Men Bowl. Michigan State 28, Iowa 24
Mike Hlas - I think it would have been fun if Mark Dantonio's parents had named him “Antonio” instead of “Mark.” Iowa 21, Michigan State 20
Nick Pugliese - In light of my feeble efforts last 2 weeks, my daughters and cat are doing picks this week. Victoria likes Iowa to upset Michigan State. Iowa 28, Michigan State 24
John Campbell - It is Micah Hyde's turn to pick off a pass and pay it forward, ala Tyler Sash in last year's Spartan game. Iowa 24, Michigan State 23
Beth Malicki - Gotta give props to Bob Brooks for staying true to the Hawks when the rest of us bailed. A true believer, that one. Oh, and John Campbell too. Iowa 21, Michigan State 7
Bob Brooks - Iowa has defeated Spartans in Kinnick seven straight times. No reason it can't eight. Hawksy walloped MSU last year and have the capacity to do it all over again. Iowa 30, Michigan State 30
J.R. Ogden – I thought Iowa would win one of these Michigan games. The Hawks won last week, but I picked them to lose. So … Iowa 28, Michigan State 27
Jeff Johnson – The Big Ten contains a smorgasbord of average football teams. These are two of them. Michigan State 23, Iowa 21
Rob Gray – Hawkeyes can't win two in a row against mighty and ranked Michigan teams after falling to lowly Minnesota, right? Oh, they're at home. Iowa 28, Michigan State 24
Jeff Linder – It's Sparty. It's Kinnick. It's a win for the Hawks. Iowa 24, Michigan State 19
James Steward – It's been a roller coaster ride so far. About time to take another dip. Michigan State 28, Iowa 24
Scott Saville – Hawks have the Spartans number and they are tough to beat at Kinnick. Iowa 24, Michigan State 17
John Sears – The Hawkeyes are still alive for the Big 10 title, as crazy as that seems. A win on Saturday and it gets real interesting. Iowa is an underdog at home again, they thrive on that. I'm feeling the Kinnick vibes. Iowa 24 , Michigan State 21
Kim Martin (from The Gazette's Facebook page) - No stopping Iowa now. Iowa 24, Michigan State 6
Nebraska at Penn State
Morehouse - Penn State finally woke up and remembered it was an institution of higher learning with a football program and not vice versa. Nebraska 17, Iowa Penn State 14
Hlas - Nebraska 9, Penn State 0.
Pugliese - Alexandra thinks Joe Paterno should be ashamed and Cornhuskers prevail. Nebraska 21, Penn State 14
Campbell - Most of us can't remember the last time Joe Paterno was not on the Penn State sidelines and no one could have predicted what finally caused his departure. Sad. Nebraska 21, Penn State 10
Malicki - I'm too sad, angry and lost for words on this. Nebraska 14, Penn State 13
Brooks - What a mess. Hard to read which way this one will go. But the players for the Nittany Lions will acquit themselves well and I'm picking them to win. Penn State 28, Nebraska 17
Ogden – Should they even play? Nebraska 21, Penn State 0
Johnson – Just hoping here, I guess. Nebraska 100, Penn State 0
Gray – Hate to pick a winner in this one, for obvious reasons. JoePa's gone, for good reason. Nebraska's really good ... well, get to it. Nebraska 24, Penn State 14
Linder – Somehow, a football game seems pretty meaningless. Nebraska 45, Penn State 14
Steward – Too much background noise for the Lions to shut out. And I don't mean the Happy Valley crowd. Nebraska 24, Penn St 14
Saville – No Paterno for the first time in 46 years. Massive shake-up and the Nittany Lions will not be ready to play. Nebraska 21, Penn State 14
Sears – There are much more important things going on in Happy Valley than a football game. The scandal is one of the most disturbing things I've ever read. There are no winners, and the only people who deserve sympathy and prayers are the victims. Nebraska 17, Penn St. 7
Martin - I see Penn State having a rough time of it with the turmoil going on. Nebraska 30, Penn State 17
Cornell at Coe
Morehouse - I think Cornell is the purple one, but I'm going with the red one with all the kids who major in ... physics, I think? Coe 35, Cornell 14
Hlas - I am friends with people who won State Senate and City Council races this week. Times change. Local candidates once built campaigns on pledges to get me off the streets. Coe 42, Cornell 21
Pugliese - Mr. Darcy (yes, that's our cat's name) could not care less but will go with the Kohawks. Coe 30, Cornell 9
Campbell - I still think this needs to be known at the Lincoln Highway Hoedown, or something like that. Coe 45, Cornell 14
Malicki - KCRG's Dubuque reporter Katie Wiedemann is a Coe grad. That's enough for me! I'm loyal to my work buddies - so lucky to be at KCRG and am finally winning over those Gazette folks. Coe 35, Cornell 17
Brooks - Another sad note. Cornell leaving the Iowa Conference to back to the Midwest Conference. We wish them well, but Coe will make their entry into the Midwest Conference easier with an easy victory. Coe 31, Cornell 7.
Ogden – Coe has dominated this series in recent memory. Don't see that changing today. Next year? Maybe. Coe 35, Cornell 17
Johnson – Defense will be optional. Coe 49, Cornell 28
Gray – Coe had a chance to win the Iowa Conference title - until falling, 49-42, to Dubuque last week. Great rivalry game. Nail-biting finish to the season. Coe 37, Cornell 36
Linder – Closer than you'd think. Coe 38, Cornell 26
Steward – I know Coe lost their IIAC hopes last week in a tough one to Dubuque. That's about all I know. Coe 349, Cornell 4
Saville – Coe is at home and has more depth and talent…but Cornell has improved and will make it a game. Coe 35, Cornell 21
Sears – It's the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi. Double whammy, its Cornell's final game in the Iowa Conference. Where has the time gone? Seriously, I just turned 30 this week. Yikes. Its been fun. Rams will play inspired, but Coe is better. I'll take the better team. Coe 38 , Cornell 14
Martin - Sounds like good numbers to me. Coe 24, Cornell 10
Iowa's Zach Derby (85) is stripped by Michigan State's Denicos Allen (28) late in the fourth quarter of their Big Ten Conference college football game Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. Michigan State recovered the ball ending Iowa's chances of a comeback. (Brian Ray/ SourceMedia Group News)
