Hot-shooting Coe tops Mount Mercy

CEDAR RAPIDS - Marshall Shedeck spent two years on the Coe bench before this men's basketball season. He says it's now his time to shine.

And Kohawks Coach Bryan Martin is glowing.

Shedeck scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to supplement a 27-point, 14-rebound performance by teammate Matt Vonderhaar and Coe cruised past Mount Mercy, 95-82, Tuesday night at Eby Fieldhouse.

Coe (4-2) used a 14-0 run midway through the first half to build an 11-point lead. Mount Mercy (7-3) never got closer than eight points the rest of the game.

Shedeck, a 6-foot-6 junior, was a Class 2A second team all-stater as a prep senior at North Cedar.

'It was a big transition coming from high school and playing Class 2A ball,” said Shedeck, who has added 20 pounds since high school and now weighs 195. 'You're not used to the physicality that comes in college. I took a couple of years to adjust.

'I knew I wasn't going to play much as a freshman, but I knew I was going to have my time to shine. I feel like that's here finally.”

Shedeck averaged slightly more than a point and less than a rebound in 25 games his first two seasons. He is averaging 15 points and 8.8 rebounds through six games this season.

'Marshall has always been talented since he's been here,” Coe Coach Bryan Martin said. 'He just had some guys in front of him.

'I knew he would help us right away this season, but he's exceeded my expectations.”

Redshirt freshman Trevor Haaland also has exceeded expections. A transfer from NCAA Division II Wayne State, Haaland tossed in 22 points that included five 3-pointers. He and senior Jacob Timm kept the Kohawks from panicking when Mount Mercy used full-court pressure to try to climb back into the game.

'This probably was not the game we expected,” Haaland said of the Kohawks' 95-point outburst, 'but it was good to get the win however we needed to get it.”

Coe shot 49.2 percent, including 12 of 29 from 3-point range, and had a 48-31 advantage in rebounds.

Mount Mercy Coach Aaron Jennings said the Kohawks' performance did not surprise him.

'We know they are an excellent basketball team that can shoot the ball and move the ball very well,” he said. 'We just didn't come out and execute the way we planned to.”

Tre Wagner had 23 points for Mount Mercy.
