Coe rallies to upset No. 10 Wartburg

Trailing 17-0 at halftime, Coe put on a furious second-half rally, capped by a 21-yard Brad Boyle- to-Jared Kuehner touchdown pass with 2:53 remaining as the Kohawks upset No. 10 Wartburg, 27-24, in an Iowa Conference game before a crowd of 5,000 at Walston-Hoover Stadium in Waverly.
Wartburg had one final chance, driving to Coe's 35 with 15 seconds remaining, but the Kohawks' Demetreus Johnson intercepted Dan Stiefel's pass over the middle to seal the victory.
Coe (2-2, 2-0) started slowly as Wartburg (3-1, 1-1) dominated the first 30 minutes to lead 17-0 at the break. Boyle got the Kohawks started in the second half. He hit Gage Mohs with a 27-yard scoring pass early in the third quarter, then scored on runs of 1 and 3 yards to give Coe a 21-17 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Wartburg regained the lead with 11:47 remaining on a 29-yard strike from Stiefel to Levi Helbing.
Coe's winning drive was 11 plays covering 95 yards. It included a key fourth-down conversion when Boyle hit Kris Hopkins to barely convert on fourth and 3. Two plays later, Boyle scrambled, then found Kuehner in the back of the end zone for the winner.
Boyle completed 19 of 26 passes for 245 yards and two scores. He also carried 11 times for 76 yards. Kuehner had eight catches for 93 yards. Wartburg's Stiefel completed 24 of 45 passes for 329 yards and two scores. Reese Thompson led the Knights on the ground, carrying 25 times for 120 yards.
Terrance Lockett led the Coe defense with 10 tackles. Jason Shupp had 12 stops to lead Wartburg.
BUENA VISTA 44, CORNELL 10 - At Storm Lake, Bobby Brown completed 15 of 26 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns as Buena Vista broke away in the second half at J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.
Cornell (2-1, 0-1 IIAC) trailed 14-10 at halftime, but the Beavers returned the opening kickoff of the second half 87 yards for a touchdown and were never headed. BV (1-3, 0-1) also returned an interception for a score and recorded a safety in the second half.
Juan Flores completed 16 of 23 passes for 212 yards and a touchdown for the Rams.
WINONA STATE 72, UPPER IOWA 31 - At Winona, Minn., Winona State built a 37-0 early in the second quarter and was never headed.
Winona State had 677 yards of total offense, 376 rushing, 301 passing.
Upper Iowa had 451 yards of offense.
For the Peacocks, Cole Jaeschke completed 18 of his 33 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown.
Jesse Hubbard caught five balls for 153 yards and a score. Jordan Otdoerfer ran for 76 yards and Tony Leggett led the Peacock defense with 10 tackles.
