CEDAR RAPIDS - Three people who were shot Friday at an apartment building near Kirkwood Community College are expected to survive, police said.
Officers arrived at 311 Kirkwood Ct. SW, No. 1, around 12:35 p.m. and found two victims. Shannon Gaskins, 21, who lives at the apartment, and Alexander White, 22, of Cedar Rapids, had both been shot in the torso, police said.
A few minutes later, a third person with gunshot wounds arrived by private vehicle at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, police said. Investigators determined Raymond Sellers, 24, of Chicago, also had been shot at the Kirkwood Court apartment.
All three people were initially listed in critical condition at Mercy. Gaskins was transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Information about their conditions wasn't available this week.
The incident prompted several facilities, including the college and nearby schools, to go into lockdown mode.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said investigators believe they know what led up to the shooting but would not release specifics. Friday's shooting and two other shootings last week share no connection, police said, and the public is not believed to be in any danger.
Anyone with information about any of the recent shootings is asked to call Linn County Crime Stoppers at 1-(800) CS-CRIME (272-7463).
