Pride Week returns to Iowa City

Pride week returns to Iowa City with a full week of events.

The yearly tradition offers an experience for people of all ages. Countless community organizations are putting on events in conjunction with organizers or scheduling content that coincides with LGBT themes.

Rainbow flags will be on the silver screen this summer as FilmScene will show four LGBT-themed movies throughout the week.

Iowa City's independent theater created 'screen glow” showcase the history of LGBT cinema. Its goal is to keep adding to the series throughout the year and possibly program a festival.

'As always we want to try to spark discussion about film as an art ... and build community unity,” Film Scene co-founder Andy Brodie said.

Each movie will be shown for one night only with regular admission prices except for 'Before You Know It,” which is free.

The film is about 'three gay seniors as they navigate the adventures, challenges and surprises of life and love in their golden years.”

The Iowa City Senior Center and Johnson County Visibility Action Team are covering the costs for the 5:45 p.m. Tuesday showing. For more information about the other three films, go to www.icfilmscene.org/screenglow.

Studio 13 is holding nightly events throughout pride week, but attendees must be at least 19-years-old to attend.

'It's great other businesses are getting involved and supporting the gay community,” saud Suzi Spalj, owner of Shakespeare's Pub and Grill.

Shakespeare's will provide free walking tacos and hot dogs while Pizza Pit will provide sides and cookies during a Picnic from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday in Upper City Park.

The fun continues from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday with a parade and 'Pride on the Pedmall” festival afterward. The parade will start at College Green Park and go through downtown Iowa City.
