Iowa City Downtown Block Party returns for all-ages celebration

It's back. The first Downtown Block Party in 2017 brought an estimated 30,000 people to the heart of Iowa City on a Saturday night for community fun. The party is returning from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday (6/23), rain or shine, throughout the entire downtown area.
It's an all-ages event featuring live music stages, sand volleyball in the middle of a city street, hatchet-throwing demonstrations, fashion show, DJ competition, silent disco (where participants listen and dance to music via wireless headphones), an outdoor movie, pingpong, giant Jenga, mini golf and other games and attractions.
Admission is free, but $11 wristbands and official cups are required for people ages 21 and over who want to take beer or wine from restaurants into the streets. Tickets can be purchased at the event or for $10 in advance at Downtowniowacity.com/events/downtown-block-party/
Here are some of the activities:
DJ competition: 4 to 9 p.m. on the street by 14 S. Clinton St.
Sand volleyball tournament: 4 to 9 p.m. on the street by 204 E. Washington St. (registration is full)
Wristband/cups sales (cash only): begin at 4:30 p.m. on site; pre-sale guests can start picking up their materials at booths
Drag show programmed by Studio 13: 5 to 6:15 p.m. on the street by 28 S. Linn St.
The Center Performances: 5 to 7 p.m., on the pop-up stage outside of Bread Garden; includes barn dancing, reading out loud and more
Dueling Pianos: 5 to 10 p.m. on the street by 118 E. Washington St.
Mini golf: 5 to 11 p.m. on the street by 112 S. Linn St.
Video game tournament: 5 to 10 p.m. in the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St.
Silent disco: 6 to 11 p.m. on the street by 21 S. Dubuque St.
Light painting with the Iowa Children's Museum: 6 to 8 p.m. in the Iowa City Public Library's story room
Englert Theatre live music stage: 6:45 to 10 p.m. on the street by 28 S. Linn St, featuring Subatlantic, Sister Wife and Flint Eastwood
Outdoor movie: 'Ghostbusters,' presented by FilmScene, 8 to 10 p.m. in the alleyway behind Yotopia, TCB, FilmScene, Brothers
Blu Collar Fashion Show and circus aerial performers: 8 to 10 p.m. on the street by 102 S. Clinton St.
Tug of war tournament: 9:40 to 11 p.m. on the street by 204 E. Washington St., preregistration required
Washington Street is filled with people during the 2017 Downtown Block Party in Iowa City.
