Cornell kept within striking distance of Central for the duration of Saturday's match, although the Rams couldn't convert on the offensive end in a 2-0 Iowa Conference men's soccer loss on Senior Day in Mount Vernon.
Cornell's defense hung tough against Central, despite a 23-3 shot advantage by the guests. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Setser recorded seven saves and had the Rams in a 1-0 match through 60 minutes.
The Dutch (9-6-1 overall, 3-3-1 IIAC) cracked through with an insurance goal in the 62nd minute. Central's first marker came 17 minutes into the match.
Cody Perreault, Casey Gilbert and Adam Westerby attempted one shot apiece for Cornell (1-16, 0-7). Junior Ben Folan worked six scoreless minutes at keeper in relief of Setser.
Senior Julian Peota notched his team-leading third goal of the season in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to Wartburg in Waverly. Peota's unassisted marker put the Rams within 2-1 at the 21-minute mark.
Wartburg (7-9, 3-4) built the lead to 3-1 by halftime, and then added one more score in the 59th minute. Peota accounted for three of Cornell's seven shots.
Setser came away with seven saves in a complete-game effort. Wartburg recorded 21 shots, 14 in the opening period.
Senior Day - Cornell recognized its two seniors - Peota and Jairo Barsallo - at halftime of Saturday's contest with Central. Peota is a fourth-year letterwinner with 18 points in 67 career matches. Barsallo is a second-year player in the program.
Coming up - The Rams close the season Wednesday with an 8 p.m. kickoff against nationally-ranked Loras (13-2-3, 5-1-1) in Dubuque. The Duhawks enter the week ranked sixth in the D3soccer.com Top 25 Poll.
