CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy erupted for 50 second-half points and the backcourt tandem of Emily Greiner and Micha Mims dominated league-leading William Penn in an 87-67 victory on Saturday at Hennessey Recreation Center.
Just two days after one of their worst shooting performances of the season, the Mustangs answered with one of their best. They shot 52.7 percent from the field, the highest since connecting on 61.3 percent of their attempts in a 103-79 victory over Purdue Calumet (Ind.) on Nov. 27.
Mount Mercy (14-11, 8-3 MCC) dominated nearly ever statistical category, but none more glaring than their 21-4 margin at the free throw line. The Mustangs were 21-of-24 (87.5%) from the line, while the Lady Statesmen (18-7, 9-2 MCC) were only 4-of-6. William Penn did outrebound Mount Mercy, 37-33.
Greiner, who leads the MCC in 3-pointers, nailed four while scoring 17 first-half points. She finished with 26 points and has 62 treys this season, already the ninth-best single-season total in school history.
Mims isn't far behind. She hit a pair of triples against the Lady Statesmen and has 58 this year, which is 10th all-time. Mims added 22 points, six rebounds, and five assists for the Mustangs.
She was joined in double figures by junior guard Ashley Koch, who had 11 points and six steals. Freshman forward Amanda Frost tallied 10 points and five boards, junior guard Laura Lippert eight points and eight rebounds.
Christa Subbert, the second-leading scorer in the MCC at 21.1 points per outing, had 21 points in the loss. Samantha Darley contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, Rachel Butler 10 points and five boards. Orielle Thomas chipped in nine rebounds, Sarah Martin five assists.
Mount Mercy is 8-2 over the last 10 games and travels to Forest City to take on Waldorf in league action on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Hanson Fieldhouse.
