The Mustangs (11-6, 4-1 MCC) managed only 18 points in the first half, thanks to a 7-of-32 (21.9%) performance from the field. Despite picking it up after the break, they finished 20-of-60 (33.3%) from the floor, their lowest percentage of the season.
A solid defensive effort kept Mount Mercy in this battle between two of the three remaining undefeated teams in the MCC. It was a one-point game, 57-56, after a pair of David Campbell free throws with 20 seconds left, but five foul shots by the Saints sealed the deal.
Watznauer ended up with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Chad Underwood contributed 13 points and eight boards. David Campbell finished with eight points, and senior guard Jerome Campbell dished out five assists.
Lamar Wall went 12-of-12 at the free throw line during a 22-point afternoon. Peter Tanzillo joined him in double figures with 10 points. Jason Landry chipped in eight points, Javier Valdez grabbed eight rebounds.
Mount Mercy faces another tough league opponent this week, hosting 16th-ranked St. Ambrose (12-3, 2-1 MCC) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hennessey Recreation Center.
