[Men's Basketball] Scroggins, Campbell spark Mustang win

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Senior guard Jimmy Scroggins and junior guard David Campbell sparked a game-winning surge late in the second half, leading the Mount Mercy men's basketball team to an 83-77 win over Grand View in Midwest Collegiate Conference action on Monday at Sisam Arena.
The Mustangs (14-7, 7-2 MCC) led by as many as 11 points in the first period, but found themselves trailing by 10 with 15:40 to go in the second half. The Vikings (12-8, 3-6 MCC) were up by seven, 63-56, when Scroggins converted a 3-point play and Campbell nailed a pair of 3-pointers as part of a 13-0 run that put Mount Mercy in front, 69-63, with 4:39 remaining.
Free throws down the stretch by Scroggins and senior guard Jerome Campbell, and crucial buckets by senior forward Marty Tope and junior forward Sam Kenyi clinched Mount Mercy's first win at Grand View since Jan. 3, 2007. The Mustangs stopped a three-game losing streak at Sisam Arena and earned a season sweep of the Vikings. Mount Mercy defeated Grand View, 78-62, on Dec. 1 in Cedar Rapids.
Scroggins paced the Mustangs with 21 points. Sophomore forward Chad Underwood added 13 points and five rebounds, Kenyi finished with 10 points and seven boards. Tope tallied nine points and six rebounds, David Campbell ended up with nine points, and Jerome Campbell had seven points and three assists. Sophomore guard Sid Beck grabbed a career-high six boards.
Kody Ingle scored 21 points for the Vikings. Kevin Smith racked up 20 points and eight rebounds and Nick Wagner 16 points and five boards. Josh Henry chipped in nine points and five rebounds, Phil Hunt seven points and six boards. Jamal LaBranch had four assists.
Mount Mercy finishes a busy week with a pair of league games at home. The Mustangs host Clarke (10-12, 3-6 MCC) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and William Penn (11-10, 3-5 MCC) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Hennessey Recreation Center. Mount Mercy beat both teams on the road earlier this season, edging Clarke, 76-69, on Jan. 2 in Dubuque, and defeating William Penn, 108-92, on Dec. 4. in Oskaloosa.
