Cornell College senior distance runner Kirkwood Donavin (Salt Lake City, Utah/West) took down a longest-standing school record with a sparkling performance in the mile Saturday at the Darren Young Classic in Grinnell.
Donavin nipped Principia's Drew Clark at the finish for a victory in 4 minutes, 13.06 seconds, establishing an NCAA provisional mark in the 26-man field. Donavin's time is best in the Iowa Conference and ranks 11th in Division III.
Donavin shattered Cornell's mile record of 4:20.10, set by Matt Trimble in 1982. Donavin was pushed by Clark, who also posted a provisional time only .17 seconds behind.
“The race set up perfect for Kirkwood,” Cornell head coach Lonnie Speidel said. “(Clark) set the pace and Kirkwood was right on him the entire race. Kirkwood made his move at the bell lap and held on in the end.”
For the third time this season, Cornell senior thrower Madison Craw (Mason City/Mason City) came away with a provisional mark in the shot put. She won the event on her fifth attempt of 43 feet, 6 inches. Craw stands ninth nationally in the event.
Donavin and Craw were part of 17 provisional performances during the meet, which featured three athletes owning the nation's top marks in their respective events.
“It was quite a meet. We knew it was going to be a high-quality meet and it lived up to the billing,” Speidel said. “Across the board, our kids competed well. We're getting better each week and I'm happy with that.”
Cornell placed fourth in the 10-team women's field with 53 points. The men scored 35 points for sixth.
The women were aided with a dominant race in the 3000. The Rams claimed the top four places, led by a victory from senior Allie Jagielo (Almond, Wis./Tri-County) in 10:42.67. Sophomore Elise Mead (Andover, Minn./Andover) was second in 10:47.05, followed by freshman Laura Ettlin (Torrance, Calif./West) in third and sophomore Leslie Smebak (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) in fourth.
Junior Christal Harris (Harrisonville, Mo./Fort Osage) turned in an impressive effort in Friday's pentathlon. She placed fifth with 2,957 points, only 43 shy of reaching a provisional mark. Harris' day was highlighted with a runner-up finish in the 55 hurdles (9.00).
“Christal competed in her first-ever pentathlon and I was really impressed with her score,” Speidel said. “She showed a lot of promise in that event.”
Junior Chase Nowak (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) lowered his season-best time in the 3000. He was runner-up and less than two seconds behind the winner in 8:46.02.
Ben Jacobs (Three Rivers, Mich./Three Rivers) placed third in the 5000 in 15:47.12. Senior Roli Teko-Folly (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) also took third in the high jump, clearing 6-2.
Coming up – Saturday, Feb. 19, at Spartan Open, Dubuque, 10 a.m. (field events), 12 p.m. (running events).
The Rams head to Dubuque Saturday in their final tune-up before the IIAC Championships Feb. 25-26 in Pella. Saturday's field includes Augustana, Loras, Coe, Luther, Knox, Carroll, Mount Mercy, Iowa Wesleyan and Dubuque.
