Wartburg wins Lutheran triangular

WAVERLY – Six NCAA Division III provisional national qualifying marks were among nine individual event titles for No. 4-ranked Wartburg College Jan. 28 and 29.
Competing in their home confines of Hoover Fieldhouse, Coach Marcus Newsom's team took first place in the team race of the 2011 Wartburg Lutheran Triangular. The Knights rolled up 276 points, eclipsing second-place Augustana College of Rock Island, Ill., (200).
Junior sprinter Nevada Morrison of Maywood, Ill., ended with two first-place finishes and provisional marks. She joined senior Brittany Melloy of Mount Pleasant, junior Kendra Kregel of Delhi and freshman Karly Cochrane of Mount Vernon on the top 4x400 relay (3:55.45) and also won the 55 meter dash (7.21 seconds). Melloy and freshman Camesha Goods of Danville, Virginia, were also double-provisional athlete over the weekend. Melloy successfully defended her Lutheran triangular pentathlon title Friday with 3,155 points, and Goods won the 55-meter hurdles (8.53 seconds) and was second in the pentathlon (3,047 points).
Rounding out the provisional marks for Newsom's team were junior Skye Morrison of Maywood, Ill. (58.25 seconds – 400) and the throwing duo of junior Sarah Hoffmann of Farley (43 feet, five inches) and sophomore Britlyn Sieck of West Union (41 feet, 10 and three-quarters inches) in the shot put.
Wartburg continues its home season Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4 and 5, welcoming a strong field to its annual indoor Select meet.
