[Men's Golf] Mustangs finish third at own Cropper Golf Classic

MARION, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy men's golf team held its own against a tough, 21-team field and finished third at the Cropper Golf Classic on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10-11, at Hunters Ridge Golf Course.
Sophomore Ryan Schrimper, competing as an individual, followed an opening round 73 with a 2-under-par 70 to finish ninth. Freshman Jacob Selander shot 75 and 70 to tie for 10th with a 1-over-par 145 total. Senior Derek McConnell also posted a top-20 finish, tying for 17th after rounds of 73 and 74.
Juniors John Milne and Ryan Schlueter were a stroke behind, tying for 21st at 4-over-par 148. Milne shot 75 and 73, Schlueter carded a 79 and then a 3-under 69 on day two, which was the second-lowest score of the tournament. Senior Declan Hasson (73-76=149) tied for 26th, freshman Finnian O'Doherty (76-75=151) tied for 34th and freshman Jack South (77-77=154) tied for 52nd.
Grand View (561) ran away with the team title, finishing 15-under for a 14-stroke victory over Illinois Wesleyan (575). Mount Mercy was third (582), followed by Grand View Red (583). Clarke and Viterbo (Wis.) tied for fifth at 600. Aaron Ahrendsen of Grand View was medalist, shooting a 6-under 66 in the final round to finish at 8-under 136 for the tournament.
The Mustangs will compete at the Clarke Invitational on Sunday and Monday, Sept. 18-19, at Thunder Hills Country Club in Peosta.
