DAVENPORT, Iowa -- For the first time in a month, the Mount Mercy men's basketball team was at full strength for Wednesday's Midwest Collegiate Conference matchup at St. Ambrose. With a full arsenal, the Mustangs blew away the 25th-ranked Bees in the second half of an 82-69 victory at Lee Lohman Arena.
A tie game at the half turned into a Mount Mercy rout as the Mustangs (12-5, 3-3 MCC) led by as many as 22 points after the break. That was due in large part to 60 percent field goal shooting over the final 20 minutes and a 52-34 rebounding advantage for the game. The Mustang defense limited the Bees (10-8, 4-2 MCC) to a 26.7 field goal percentage in the second half as well.
Junior forward Chad Underwood was one of five Mustangs in double figures, scoring 15 points to become the 19th player in school history to join the 1,000-point club. He sits at 1,001 points in 74 career games for a 13.5 average. Underwood also pulled down seven rebounds.
Senior guard David Campbell hit four 3-pointers while pouring in a team-high 17 points for Mount Mercy. Junior guard Markus Cocroft added 12 points, eight boards and four assists. Senior forward Sam Kenyi finished with a double-double, scoring 11 points and hauling down 13 rebounds.
Junior forward Alex Coleman tallied 10 points and five boards. The Mustangs got support from the bench as junior guard Sid Beck contributed nine points and six rebounds and sophomore guard Bobby Sherwood had four assists.
Marquez Davis scored a game-high 21 points and snared six rebounds for the Bees. Nicholas Frazier chipped in 15 points and Mike Kennedy, the second-leading scorer in the MCC at more than 19 points per game, ended up with 12 points to go with six boards and five steals. Andy Supergan tallied a team-high nine rebounds.
Mount Mercy will play the last of three straight road games on Saturday, traveling to Des Moines to take on AIB at 3:00 p.m. at the AIB Activities Center.
