PRIMM, Nev. -- The Mount Mercy women's golf team opened the spring season against some of the best competition in the country at the Battle of the Primm on Monday and Tuesday at Primm Valley Resort.
In all, 13 of the 14 teams at the tournament were either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Women's Golf Coaches' Top 25 Poll. That includes fourth-ranked British Columbia, which edged top-ranked Oklahoma City for the team title, 607-614.
Oklahoma Christian, the 16th-ranked team in the nation, was third (620), followed by 19th-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) (626) and 12th-ranked California State-San Marcos (640). Mount Mercy was 14th with a 743 team total, nine strokes behind 13th-place Viterbo (Wis.), the 25th-ranked team in the country.
Senior Laura Wilberg carded rounds of 92 and 86 for a 178 total to finish in a tie for 54th. Freshman Madison Goodfellow had the best single-round score of any Mustang, an 85, to go with an opening round 99 for a 184 total that was good for a tie for 62nd.
Junior Bailee Goodfellow tied for 64th (93-93=186), senior Kristine Kouba was 72nd (97-99=196) and sophomore Anna Bachman finished 75th (109-98=207). Anna Arrese of Oklahoma Christian was medalist with a 3-under-par 141 that included rounds of 72 and 69.
Mount Mercy competes at the Ashford Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 6-7, at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside.
