CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy played aggressively from the start on Wednesday night, dominating possession of the ball en route to a 3-0 victory over Waldorf in Midwest Collegiate Conference men's soccer at Kingston Stadium.
Junior defender Stuart Mattison set up sophomore midfielder Juan Maffey's second goal of the season as the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the match. Junior forward Matt Rumery made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute on an assist by freshman midfielder Miguel Perez and junior forward Enrique Cortina capped off the scoring with a little help from freshman midfielder Bedi Ucar in the 60th minute. Rumery and Cortina share the team lead with four goals each this season.
Senior goalkeeper Josh Putz had a pair of saves in his first shutout of the season. Erik Hundevad of Waldorf (1-5-0, 0-2-0 MCC) stopped eight of Mount Mercy's 11 shots on goal. The Mustangs (4-5-2, 2-1-0 MCC) out-shot the Warriors, 18-4, overall and put 11 shots on goal compared to just two for Waldorf.
Mount Mercy will take on St. Ambrose in conference play on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in Davenport.
