Iowa's Thomas Gilman earns weekly Big Ten honor

Jan. 3, 2017 4:55 pm
Iowa's Thomas Gilman earned a few awards from his latest performance at the Midlands Championships.
He has received one more honor.
Gilman was named the Big Ten's co-Wrestler of the Week after he dominated his way to the 125-pound title and third Midlands crown Dec. 30. Gilman shared the award with Minnesota's Ethan Lizak, the conference announced Tuesday. It's the second time Gilman has garnered conference Wrestler of the Week honors.
Gilman, the nation's top-ranked 125-pounder and returning NCAA finalist, went 6-0 with five bonus-point victories. He had three technical falls, a pin and notched a major decision over Nebraska's second-seeded Tim Lambert in the final.
Gilman scored more team points (28 1/2) than all other Midlands competitors. He also earned 'Champion of Champions' honors, which is voted on by other tournament championships, and Dan Gable Most Outstanding Wrestler award.
'The adjustment he made from his sophomore year to his junior year, he's gotten better at that,' Iowa Coach Tom Brands said about Gilman after the opening session at Midlands. 'His pace is high. He can score a lot of points. He can score a lot of points a lot of different ways.'
Gilman improved to 14-0 and became the 11th Hawkeye wrestler to win three Midlands titles.
