Farewell Medical Mall, Hello 'Pavilion'

Apr. 19, 2011 11:04 am
This just popped into my inbox, or as I like to call it, my email pavilion:
Physicians' Clinic of Iowa Medical Pavilion named for downtown Cedar RapidsCommunity's first private, for-profit investment since the flood of 2008 will put patients at the center of specialty care Cedar Rapids, Iowa (April 19, 2011) – Physicians' Clinic of Iowa Medical Pavilion is the name selected for the $47-million investment in patient-centered specialty medicine by one of Iowa's largest, private, multispecialty medical groups. The name announcement comes as Physicians' Clinic of Iowa prepares to break ground on the new facility May 19. The Physicians' Clinic of Iowa Medical Pavilion, at 202 10th St. SE next to I-380 in Cedar Rapids' proposed medical district, will be a single-stop specialty care destination – a state-of-the-art ambulatory care facility that brings coordinated services together under one roof and creates an environment for collaboration that delivers better care and faster service. “Building better health care means building everything around the patient,” said Physicians' Clinic of Iowa CEO Mike Sundall. “The new Physicians' Clinic of Iowa Medical Pavilion will deliver quality, convenient, coordinated and affordable specialty care; it's a new model for Iowa that improves patient satisfaction without increased cost.” The Physicians' Clinic of Iowa Medical Pavilion is the first private, for-profit investment in downtown Cedar Rapids since the flood of 2008. Sundall pointed to the $16.2 million in construction employment and $100 million annual economic impact from the anticipated 2,500 daily patients and visitors as reasons for Cedar Rapids to take pride in the development. “Physicians' Clinic of Iowa is making this investment in support of the high-quality, affordable medical and surgical care patients deserve,” said Sundall. “We're pleased to be helping revitalize downtown and look forward to announcing pharmacy, café and other tenants very soon.”

Personally, I liked Medical Mall. It had a nice woody sound. It's alliterative. It lent itself to great slogans "The Medical Mall Has it All!" And it was MedMall for short. A real space saver.
But it's their dime, so I guess they can name it whatever they want.
Pavilion sounds fancier, I suppose. But it also makes me think of the State Fair, where livestock are shown. Maybe if you have a great checkup, the doc will present you with a blue ribbon. That's a joke. My insurance company would never pay for a blue ribbon.
Public relations. What will they think of next? Ryan Hanser of PCI's PR firm, Hanser and Associates, called to let me know the clinic's physicians, not his firm, picked the new name. So there you have it.
Maybe you have a better name. "That Dang Thing that Closed 2nd Ave." or something.
