NIT has 11 automatic qualifiers, 21 at-large spots; your NCAA .pdf bracket
Mar. 11, 2012 7:23 pm
Iowa will know its postseason fate at 8 p.m. when the National Invitation Tournament bracket is released on ESPNU. There are 32 available spots in the NIT.
All conference regular-season champions who are not selected for the NCAA tournament automatically qualify for the NIT. This year there are 11. They include Stony Brook, Nevada, Middle Tennessee State, Oral Roberts, Bucknell, Washington (yes from the Pac-12), Savannah State, Akron, Texas-Arlington, Valparaiso and Drexel.
That leaves 21 spots for at-large schools. I think nine schools are virtual locks: Northwestern, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Arizona, Oregon, Seton Hall, Miami (Fla.) and George Mason.
There seems to be 18 other schools vying for the final 12 spots. They include Iowa, Minnesota, Arkansas, LSU, Stanford, UCLA, Maryland, Massachusetts, Dayton, LaSalle, St. Joseph's, Weber State, Central Florida, Marshall, Northern Iowa, Butler, Wagner and Wyoming.
There are plenty of other mid-majors available. I'm not sure how much it matters but the CIT expanded to 32 teams and there's also the 16-team CBI.
