CEDAR RAPIDS -- Coe rained in 14 3-point baskets and needed them to hold off Cornell in an Iowa Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night, 72-67, at Eby Fieldhouse in Cedar Rapids.
Coe (16-7, 10-4) led 37-31 at halftime and never trailed in the second half. But Cornell (3-19, 1-12) didn't go away, trailing by that same six-point margin on a Reggie Greenwood 3-pointer with about 5 minutes to play. Coe built the lead back up to 11 points, but a Greenwood 3-point play with 2:10 left made it 72-67. Neither team scored again.
The 3-point basket total is the second most for a Coe men's team. David Mataloni made 5 of 8 treys and scored 19 points. Kevin Gaster (13 points), Andrew Wirth (11) and Garrett Cross (13) each added three 3-pointers. Seth Light added 10 points.
Greenwood scored 25 points for Cornell, Alex Miller 13 and Joey Guth 11.
ST. AMBROSE 70, MOUNT MERCY 54 - St. Ambrose improved to 13-2 in the MCC with the victory in Cedar Rapids.
Mount Mercy (16-10, 7-8), which trailed 37-25 at halftime, got 13 points from Troy Peter, 12 from Sam Kenyi and 11 from Chad Underwood. Marquez Davis scored 25 points for St. Ambrose.
KIRKWOOD 89, CLINTON 53 - Mike Weber scored all of his game-high 15 points in a decisive first half to lead Kirkwood in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference game at Clinton.
The Eagles (21-3, 8-0) held a 42-21 lead at halftime and went on a 17-0 run in the first nine minutes of the second half to put the game away.
Matt Tiby added 12 points for Kirkwood, and Eddie Denard chipped in with 10 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Kirkwood returns to action next Wednesday at home against NIACC.
