IOWA CITY - The struggles continued Sunday for the Iowa women's soccer team.
After winning five of their first six matches, the Hawkeyes dropped their third straight, 2-0, to Ohio State.
Iowa fell to 5-4 overall, 0-2 in the Big Ten.
'We are frustrated,” Iowa Coach Dave Dilanni said. 'The approach to the first half was great, the kids battled and worked hard, but we made too many mistakes that cost us points.”
The Hawkeyes came out fighting in the first half, but had a hard time breaking through the Buckeyes' strong defensive shield. Olivia Fiegel had a one-on-one opportunity in the 12th minute, but couldn't get it past the OSU goalie.
With near record-high temperatures, both teams struggled to score in the first half. Ohio State took nine shots against the Hawkeyes while Iowa only took two.
The game picked up in the second half, but not for Iowa.
The Buckeyes scored on a Morgan Walcott free kick in the 55th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Not long after that, Ohio State got its second goal via Sammy Edwards.
'We gave the ball up about five seconds before that,” Dilanni said. 'Everyone looks at the goal, but we gave the ball up with two players open in the middle.
'What happened in the second half is that we just stopped playing. Whether we got tired or got undisciplined with that one play. Unfortunately, we didn't recover and the ball kind of got banged around.”
Iowa goalkeeper Clair Graves finished with eight saves.
'Being down 1-0 is a good opportunity to tie the game and being able to take it into overtime,” she said, 'and being down 2-0 makes it a lot bigger feat.”
Dilanni said he wants to get a little more out of his short-handed forwards. Rose Ripslinger and Kaleigh Haus, two of Iowa's best forwards, are injured.
'We're a different team when we can play with Rose Ripslinger up top. We need her back,” Dilanni said.
Iowa hits the road this week with games at Michigan (Friday) and Michigan State (Sunday).
