CEDAR RAPIDS — Kirkwood Community College shortstop Korry Howell has agreed to sign with the Milwaukee Brewers, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America.
Howell, from Chicago, was a 12th-round pick of the Brewers in last month's Major League Baseball Draft. He will receive a signing bonus of $210,000.
Howell was drafted last year after his freshman season at Kirkwood in the 19th round by the Kansas City Royals, but returned to school, helping the Eagles to the NJCAA Division II World Series.
This is another loss for the Iowa baseball program, which had signed Howell, considered an athletic player with above-average speed. The Hawkeyes also had outfielder Robert Neustrom, catcher Tyler Cropley and pitchers Brady Schanuel, Nick Allgeyer and Zach Daniels turn pro.
Neustrom, Schanuel, Allgeyer and Daniels all had college eligibility remaining.
