Iowa delegates react to Trump speech, convention

Jul. 21, 2016 11:45 pm
Reaction from Iowa delegates at the close of the 2016 GOP national convention in Cleveland:
Delegate Kay Quirk of Alta
'Speech sounded angry, almost yelling. Focus on negatives, not positives. Merely reading a speech; written by someone else. Talk is cheap, needs to show some action. Talking about affordable healthcare for all, reminiscent of Obama or Bernie.”
Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds
'(Donald Trump) has been successful as a businessman and I think he's smart enough to realize that it's not about the individual, it's about the team that you put together and I feel very comfortable that he put together a top-notch team. He will have a vision, he'll have a broad objective, a broad agenda, and then he will pick the right people and he will give them the flexibility to go out there and execute. He doesn't like to lose. He likes to win and I think that's going to be a driver for him. We're at a pivotal place in this country's history and so he has an amazing opportunity to take what he's been presented and turn it around. It's not easy. You can't be afraid to shake it up and I don't think he's going to be afraid to shake it up.”
Delegate Bill Anderson, state senator from Pierson
'I think we're building a positive message for November and that's what I came here to do. Obviously, I didn't support Mr. Trump during the caucuses but at the end of the day we have a process and this is the fulfillment of that process. I'm excited about Mike Pence as his running mate from Indiana. They're going to go out and they're going to campaign together, there's going to be a message here that they're going to build towards November and I think its' going to be a message that we can all coalesce around and vote for a Trump-Pence ticket.”
Delegate Steve Scheffler, Republican national committeeman
'I think we're on the road to unity. It will take a few people awhile to get there. But I think we're going to get there when people realize what's at stake - a woman that makes Richard Nixon look very good and we're at the tipping point of losing our republic. So I think people will get there.”
Delegate Jake Chapman, state senator from Adel
'Look, you can't discredit what Trump has been able to do in his business life and that's what Americans are looking for. We've got a broken system. We've got a D.C. that's corrupt, that has failed the American people and that's why he has resonated so well is he's opposite of that and so it's exciting. You can definitely feel there's a unity coalescing here at Cleveland.”
Donna Robinson, alternate delegate from Marengo
'I think that people are tremendously impressed by the whole Trump family and operation. You could tell that the whole family works together. I was just really impressed learning about the Trump family.”
Delegate Jason Schultz, a state senator from Schleswig
'Trump has obviously spent a lot of time working on studying the foreign policy situation.” He said Trump also brought the convention together. 'The crowd was not only the largest, it was unified.”
Convention attendee Jeanita McNulty of Davenport
'A very strong speech! Law and order is so important in our leaders today. ‘America first' well received! Mr. Trump was presidential tonight and did an impressive job.”
