Gameday crew picks ...
Sep. 26, 2009 9:25 am
ESPN's College Gameday crew picked Penn State to beat Iowa today.
Desmond Howard had the Nittany Lions winning by a touchdown. Lee Corso wore the Nittany Lion hat.
Through Gameday's first segment, ESPN's talking heads revisited last year's 24-23 Iowa win against a then-unbeaten Penn State and spoke to Penn State's current players about revenge.
Former Michigan star and ESPN analyst Desmond Howard said Penn State linebacker Navarro Bowman will play but be hampered by his groin injury. ESPN's Lee Corso brought up Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz's 6-2 record against Penn State's legend Joe Paterno, the best record of any coach against Paterno.
ESPN/ABC reporter Rob Stone did a profile of "Paternoville" which boasts hundreds of college students in tents in University Park. Penn State QB Daryll Clark visited the site on Thursday night and told the students "I guarantee we will give you fire, I guarantee we will give you some excitement, I guarantee we will give you touchdowns."
In an interview with ESPN, Paterno said he doesn't thrive on revenge as a motivator, rather he uses respect. "(Iowa) played a heck of a game last year," he said. "They went the extra mile to get good enough to beat us."
ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit said Iowa's basic defense could cause problems for Penn State's offensive line because of the way it twists and its swarming nature.
A storm is headed to western Pennsylvania tonight. The temperature looking at 55 degrees with a 90 percent chance of rain.
