Iowa football, basketball avoid NCAA sanctions
May. 26, 2011 7:41 am
Iowa's football and men's basketball programs avoided NCAA sanctions in cases involving minor violations.
Last summer, the football program was turned in to the Big Ten Conference by another school for posting a summer workout video to the athletics department's Web site. The NCAA ruled it a secondary violation because coaches could check attendance of the voluntary workouts, but the NCAA did not penalize the program.
The football program again was turned in to the NCAA for improper contact with a high school junior before July 2010. Both the assistant coach, Darrell Wilson, and the student-athlete denied the allegation, and the NCAA this spring ruled that no violation occurred.
The NCAA deemed that no further action take place regarding the men's basketball program after four potential recruits met with celebrities Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore at halftime of a football game during an unofficial visit last September. The high-profile case was ruled a secondary violation.
In October, Iowa's athletics department self-reported that a men's swimming prospect had impermissible contact with assistant coach Frances Malone and was ruled ineligible for potential competition at Iowa. The NCAA reinstated the potential recruit's eligibility, ruled the violation as secondary and stripped Iowa of one permissible off-campus recruiting contact with the prospect.
