Three challengers and two incumbents were elected to the University Heights city council Tuesday night. Mike Haverkamp won with 354 votes, along with Jim Lane with 334 votes, Silvia Quezada with 324, Virginia Miller with 296, and Zadok Nampala with 283. Louise From was re-elected mayor with 90 percent of the vote.
The council election was seen by some to be yet another referendum on a high-profile development plan, which has divided much of the city over the years. The previous election in 2011 left a majority of the council opposing any development, which has shifted as plans are being finalized for the development. A majority of the newly-elected council has expressed interest in mixed-use and commercials plans.
