Iowa reaches settlement with retailer in data breach case

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller's office announced the state has reached a settlement with a retail company over the breach of credit and debit card information.TJX Companies Inc. the parent company of T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and other retailers, has agreed to pay $9.75 million to 41 states including Iowa, Miller's office said.

The company's data breach involved 47 million debit and credit cards between 2005 and 2007, according to Miller's office.

Of the total settlement, $5.5 million will be used by the states for data and consumer protection efforts. Another $1.75 million will fund the states' costs in investigating the matter, and $2.5 million will go into a trust fund to aid states' efforts in setting data security policies and enforcing them.

Iowa's share of the settlement is $28,000, which Miller's office said will be used for education and consumer education.
