The Black Hawk County Health Department today confirmed that a University of Northern Iowa student tested positive for the H1N1 virus.
The virus specimen was submitted for testing several days ago. The male student, who lives in a Cedar Falls apartment, is now symptom-free.
UNI will give 2,000 seasonal flu shots free to UNI students beginning Tuesday and running through Sept. 30.
The college is encouraging all students, faculty and staff to get a vaccination for seasonal flu. The shots do not protect against H1N1, commonly called swine flu, but can help the overall population remain healthier.
In anticipation of the flu's arrival at UNI, the university initiated several preventive measures, including sending letters to students, parents, faculty and staff with flu prevention tips and recommendations of how to cope if they become ill with the flu.
Free flu kits that include a digital thermometer, generic Dayquil, generic Claritin, lip balm, hand sanitizer, tissues and masks are available for all students who experience flu symptoms.
For ill students living in residence halls, prepackaged meals also will be provided.
