Iowa gubernatorial race ‘Leans R’

Feb. 5, 2010 11:21 am
Gov. Chet Culver's re-election chances have been weakened by his decision to accept a state Supreme Court ruling to allow same-sex marriage, according Sabato's Crystal Ball.
University of Virginia Center for Politics Director Larry Sabato called the “once-certain reelection is shakier because of, yet again, the gay marriage issue.”
“Culver had opposed gay marriage, but after the Iowa Supreme Court instituted it, Culver basically went along,” Sabato wrote in his recent State of the Statehouses analysis of gubernatorial races.
If Iowa's fundamentalist Christian bloc coalesces around the GOP nominee, Culver will be in trouble, Sabato said.
He lists the race as “Leans Republican” and predicted that if the election were today, Republicans would pick up the seat.
