Did you know that 18-24 year olds have the highest sexually transmitted disease (STD) rates in Iowa? Or that talking to your children about sex and healthy relationships has been shown to actually
delay their sexual debut? These are just some of the issues the Sexual Health Alliance of Linn and Johnson Counties is working to address. The Sexual Health Alliance, which is a community coalition focused on improving our community's health was formed in December 2010 and is composed of representatives of nearly 30 organizations in both Linn and Johnson Counties. The coalition's main goal is to help make the community aware of the resources available in our communities, especially HIV and STD testing and education services.
Interested in learning more while having a fun night out on the town? The Sexual Health Alliance will be having their First Annual Soiree hosted by the Cedar Rapids Piano Lounge on Sunday, October 23
rd
from 4-7 p.m. This event, emceed by local personalities DJ Lady J and Pretty Belle, is open to all ages and will feature plenty of door prizes, free dessert, and lots of silent auction of items from businesses in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The first 100 people in the door will also get a grab bag filled with goodies, condoms and sexual health information. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door the day of the event. Proceeds from the event will go directly to the Sexual Health Alliance, allowing the coalition to increase outreach and educational services.
