“Swing your partner right as we start; the farther you go, the better your heart!” Get ready for a swingin' good time at the 38th Annual Don Roberts Square Dance and fundraiser for the American Heart Association. The Rapid 8's Square Dance Club of Cedar Rapids and the American Heart Association will host the dance on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at the Knights of Columbus Hall (5650 Kacena Ave, Marion), from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Named after Don Roberts, or “Old Yellow Shoes” as he was known, a popular square dance caller and instructor in the Cedar Rapids area since the late 1950's, the square dance fundraiser was born from Robert's desire to help others after suffering a heart attack in 1961. The first dance was held in 1962, but was discontinued until its renewal in 1974 when it became an annual event. Roberts died of a heart attack in October 1979, but the dance bearing his name continues in his memory.
The public and all square dance clubs in the area are invited to come. There will be banners presented to the club traveling the furthest, with at least one square and a traveling banner to the club with the most members present.
Refreshments and a silent auction will round out this family-friendly event. All are welcome and all proceeds benefit the American Heart Association to support research, community programs, and public and professional education.
Any questions regarding the dance can be directed to Syl Handley, Dance Committee Chairman at 319-365-5417 or the American Heart Association at 319-378-1763.
