CORALVILLE - The Johnson County Democratic Party has chosen Lisa Green-Douglass as its nominee for a Jan. 19 special election.
On Wednesday, Green-Douglass was unanimously chosen at the Johnson County Democratic Convention to run for the seat left vacant after former Supervisor Terrence Neuzil resigned.
With Johnson County Republicans not planning to nominate a candidate for the election, Green-Douglass, who served for 14 years on the Johnson County Democrats Central Committee, is poised to run against no-party candidate Chris Hoffman, who was elected last month to his third term on the North Liberty City Council.
Officials with Johnson County Republicans said this week the group would not be hosting a nomination convention, as a viable candidate could not be found to run in the GOP spot.
The election was scheduled earlier this month to fill the seat of Neuzil, who resigned last month to take a job in Michigan. Officials in the Auditor's Office scheduled the vote for Jan. 19 to take care of it before the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 1.
Other prospective candidates who plan to run as independent candidates have until 5 p.m. Dec. 28 to file with the required 250 signatures.
Early voting begins the week of Jan. 4 at the Johnson County Auditor's Office.
On Jan. 19, the polls for the special election will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
