Iowa City seeks volunteers to empty sandbags

Iowa City is seeking volunteers to help empty sandbags used as flood barriers the past several weeks.
As water has receded following flooding in late May and early June, the city has retrieved sandbags that were placed near homes and businesses, according to a news release. The sand will be used on streets in the winter and for other public works projects, but first the bags must be emptied, according to the city.
Volunteers 14 and older are asked to help do that from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 11-13. People younger than 18 must have a parent sign a liability waiver. Check in at the Streets Complex at 3800 Napoleon Lane. Wear closed-toe shoe and bring a box cutter or utility knife.

Bryton Ostler, a student at University of Oklahoma who is originally from Iowa City, removes sandbags from a home on Normandy Drive in Iowa City on the morning of June 22, 2013. Bryton decided to come out because he hasn't been able to find a job for the summer and has consequently been spending time volunteering. (Kaitlyn Bernauer/Gazette-KCRG9)
