Cedar Rapids hopes to resume leaf collection later this week

Monday's snow is affecting the leaf collection program in Cedar Rapids, but it isn't expected to end the program for the season altogether.
Megan Murphy, utilities communications coordinator for the City of Cedar Rapids, said in a email Monday that city vacuum trucks were not out Monday, because the snow and ice freeze up the vacuum equipment and the leaves freeze inside the collection truck.
Murphy says the city is hoping that warmer temperatures scheduled for later this week will allow the vacuum trucks to get back on the streets to collect leaves. In the meantime, she said, residents are encouraged to use their Yardy carts or paper leaf bags to get their leaves collected, if they so choose.
