Poll: Majority of Americans frown on smokers

A majority of Americans are not happy with people who smoke, according to a new poll from Poll Position, a non-partisan news, polling, and social media company.

In a national scientific telephone survey, 52% of the people we asked said they frown on people who smoke, 31% did not and 17% had no opinion.

In the 18-29 year old age group, 63% frown on smokers to just 21% who do not. Sixteen percent did not offer an opinion.

Among Republicans, 54% were not happy with smokers, 31% did not have a problem and 16% did not have an opinion. A majority of Democrats also frowned on smokers by a 53% to 31% margin. Sixteen percent had no opinion. Independents weighed in with 48% saying they are not happy with smokers, 31% did not have a problem and 21% offered no opinion.

African-Americans proved the sole exception in our poll with 51% saying they do not frown on people who smoke compared to 42% who do frown on smokers.

Poll Position's scientific telephone survey of 1,110 registered voters nationwide was conducted October 23, 2011 and has a margin of error of ±3%.
