CEDAR RAPIDS - An internet disruption that had email and internal networks down for the city of Cedar Rapids staff and services has been restored, city spokeswoman Maria Johnson said on Tuesday morning.
Johnson said city staff were unable to send or receive emails. Some billing operations were also disrupted. Payment kiosks were down at the Water Administration Building and City Services Center. Customers could still pay bill at City Hall and online from a device that is not on the city's network, she said.
CenturyLink is the carrier for the city's internet service. Johnson said they were told a fiber line was struck and discovered overnight. Others also experienced outages, she said.
Nancy DeVinay, a spokeswoman for CenturyLink, said acknowledged some customers in Cedar Rapids may be experiencing disruptions to their data services, but service is expected to be restored for all customers by the end of the day. She attributed the outage to a 'third party fiber cut.”
