Survey finds Iowa bad for entrepreneurs

Dec. 2, 2009 1:30 pm
The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council has released its 14th annual rankings of the states based public policy climates for small business and entrepreneurship. It Iowa ranked 41st -- or 11th worst -- among the 50 states and District of Columbia.
Among the negatives for Iowa, according to the council, were high individual capital gains, corporate income and corporate capital gains tax rates; imposition of individual and corporate alternative minimum taxes; state estate taxes, high unemployment taxes and a large number of state and local government employees relative to population.
Among the positives were a relatively low number of health insurance mandates, a fairly low crime rate and Iowa's status as a right-to-work state.”
The council is a nonpartisan, non-profit small business advocacy group that works to protect small business and promote entrepreneurship.
