Vander Plaats: Culver MIA on protecting livestock industry

Apr. 13, 2010 4:34 pm
Touring an egg production facility today, Republican gubernatorial hopeful Bob Vander Plaats said the animal agriculture industry is an important part of the state's economy and “will have my strongest support as governor.”
He warned that USDA proposed meat testing requirements to keep bacteria out of food products while well-intended, will put livestock farmers out of business.
“Iowa farmers and food processors already maintain high safety standards because they know it's their good names and reputations that are on the line,” Vander Plaats said.
Gov. Chet Culver should be speaking up for Iowa livestock producers, but “once again, our current governor is missing in action when small businesses, working Iowans and communities across this state need him the most.”
“If this happened on my watch, I guarantee you that the people in Washington would be hearing from me loud and clear,” Vander Plaats said after touring a Center Fresh Egg facility at Sioux Center Tuesday.
