The Iowa Democratic Party has named Sue Dvorsky of Coralville as its new chairwoman heading into this year's general election.
The party's state central committee elected Dvorsky Sunday night, and the decision was announced Monday. Dvorsky has served as acting chair since earlier this month after chairman Michael Kiernan stepped down due to health reasons.
Dvorsky, 55, is the wife of State Sen. Bob Dvorsky and recently retired from teaching special education in Iowa City.
“I'm honored to be accepting this position,” Dvorsky said in a statement. “Michael Kiernan laid a fantastic groundwork for this election season.”
Kiernan was elected first vice-chair Sunday night.
Iowa Democrats this year are seeking to help re-elect Gov. Chet Culver and have nominated Roxanne Conlin to challenge U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, among other races.
