Roberts calls for 10% income tax cut

Apr. 13, 2010 4:37 pm
Republican gubernatorial hopeful Rep. Rod Roberts of Carroll wants to cut personal income taxes by 10 percent. Combined with his plan to eliminate the corporate income tax, slashing the state income tax by 10 percent will rejuvenate Iowa's sluggish economy, provide new jobs, and strengthen Iowa's families and communities, Roberts said Tuesday.
“As April 15 nears, Iowans are feeling the burden of the state and federal governments now more than ever,” he said. “We need to get government off the backs of Iowa taxpayers. Cutting Iowa's personal income tax is about creating jobs and stimulating the economy, but it's also about showing respect for Iowa taxpayers.”
Roberts, who will address a Tea Party rally in Spencer on Thursday, pointed out that his cut to the personal income tax would benefit middle-class families in particular. An individual with a taxable income of $50,000 would save roughly $400 per year.
Roberts further noted that his plans to cut corporate and personal income taxes will allow him to be the first Governor in years to reduce the size of state government. This is because Roberts has vowed to abide by a limitation that prohibits state government from spending more than 99% of projected revenue. Since Roberts's tax reform plans will result in less revenue for the state, the 99% spending limitation will require state government to spend fewer taxpayer dollars, too.
