Democratic chair wants GOP hopefuls to address veterans issues

Mar. 3, 2010 10:01 am
Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Michael Kiernan is chastising Republican gubernatorial hopefuls for not responding to his request that they join Gov. Chet Culver in supporting Iowa military families and veterans.
“This is shameful,” he said. “Honoring our commitment to military families and to our veterans is how we keep moving Iowa forward. Their silence on this issue is truly telling.”
He said former Gov. Terry Branstad and Bob Vander Plaats haven't mentioned the issue on the campaign trail. Rep. Rod Roberts, R-Carroll, voted against HF 2110, the “trailing spouse” bill that would extend unemployment benefits to Iowans who leave their jobs to follow deployed spouses.
