Gazette Visuals Sep. 13, 2019 11:29 am
With school in full swing, it's time to get caught up on The Gazette's visuals staff's favorite news and feature photographs from August.
Avia Birker, 5, and Gia Birker, 7, of Vinton eat ears of sweet corn at a celebration of Vinton's Sesquicentennial Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019. The events kicked off a week of festivities to commemorate Vinton's 150th year and included a sweet corn festival throwback, boat parade, and live music by the river. (Rebecca F. Miller/The Gazette)
Festival-goers walk past the Birthplace Cottage at the Hoover National Historic Site at Hoover's Hometown Days in West Branch on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019. The city and National Park Service celebrated President Herbert Hoover's hometown with a parade, live music, fireworks, and a Hooverball tournament. The Hoover Presidential Library and Museum offered fest-goers free entry to its exhibits during the event. (Rebecca F. Miller/The Gazette)
Bonsai trees are displayed at an exhibition by the Iowa Bonsai Association outsidew of NewBo City Market in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019. Two-year-old Zeddie Niyonizigiye of Cedar Rapids shakes hands with Sgt. Laura Faircloth of the Cedar Rapids Police Department during the Eastern Iowa African Diaspora's National Neighborhood Night Out celebration at Ellis Park in Cedar Rapids Tuesday, August 6, 2019. Since I am leaving photojournalism I feel I can indulge in some nostalgia and remember how many mundane news assignments I have salvaged with an average photo of a cute kid. I will miss the excuse to interact with random strangers that the newspaper offered. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette)
Cherry tomates ripen on the vine in the backyard garden at the home of 'Sub' and Pat Drahos in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019. The couple plants a variety of vegetables in quantities that allow them to enjoy their home-grown bounty all year. (Rebecca F. Miller/The Gazette)
Seventeen-year-old Mikayla VonBehren of Anamosa removes a bridle from her horse Winston in the Horse Barn after competing at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on Thursday, August 8, 2019. VonBehren won grand champion halter and reserve grand champion trail and was a finalist for showmanship. I really liked the strong yet soft light of the horse barn and finding a quiet moment amongst the chaos, noise and throngs of people at the State Fair. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette)
Produce sits on a table following judging in the Agriculture Building during the opening day of the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on Thursday, August 8, 2019. I didn't have a lot of direction on this assignment so I was wandering to see what sort of scenes I found visually interesting. The large table packed with produce as people buzzed around filling out paperwork following judging. Wasn't really a photo in and of itself but this building had a balcony. Climbing on things and lying on the ground have been staples for me as I searched for an angle to make something a little bit more interesting. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette)
Former Vice President and Democratic presidential hopeful waves to fairgoers as he arrives to speak at the Des Moines Register Political Soapbox during the opening day of the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on Thursday, August 8, 2019. I won't miss being packed on a riser with media from all over the world all shooting nearly identical photos of the guy at the podium. I went across the street and stood on a bench because the large pack of media and then gathering crowd intrigued me. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette)
Sid Karasek, 15, of Marion is photographed on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019. Karasek, who suffers from multiple chronic illnesses, recently started a support group for teens who also struggle with chronic illness. The group meets at the Marion Public Libaray. (Rebecca F. Miller/The Gazette)
Fall is the time of year when the new/renovated school tour assignments happen. I really enjoyed the enthusiasm that the principal Julie Robinson showed as she lead the tour of her new building. Julie Robinson principal at Horace Mann Elementary School talks about the playground improvements as the addition and complete renovation of the existing building is set to open for the 2019/2020 academic year in Iowa City, Iowa, on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019. Charles Kress of Independence stoops down has he enters the Strait Log Cabin during Log Cabin Fest at the Depot Museum and Strait Log Cabin in Center Point Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019. Visitors could try their hand at rope making, grinding corn and using a washboard. Sarah Uthoff, a local Laura Ingalls Wilder historian, acted out stories from Laura's childhood and reflected on her life. (Rebecca F. Miller/The Gazette
This was a quick, one-light food photo for a food column. The warm highlight in the background is actually the afternoon sun reflecting off the hardwood floor in the adjoining living room. I liked that it gave some separation to make the cake standout a little better. Sweet raspberry blackout treasure cake made by Michelle Madden in southeast Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
I liked the expression on Christine Grant's face and the moment of that human connection. Christine Grant greets well wishers near the entrance to the elementary school that bears her name in North Liberty, Iowa on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
I saw this out of the corner of my eye. I was bobbing and weaving to get a clear angle from the people walking in front of me. I only got three frames off. This one was the only one with her reflection in it, which is what I has envisioned. Third grader Ayla Trolliet is reflected in a mirror she put in her locker as she puts up photographs during the opening of Christine Grant Elementary School in North Liberty, Iowa on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019. Ayla was excited to have her first locker ever. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
A slow day at a hobby shop since it was a Monday and the first day of classes at the University of Iowa. This store is packed with such a variety of stuff. I particularly liked the section with the whoopee cushions and squirt coins. I didn't see any Sea Monkeys though. Tim Woolums owner/manager at The Hobby Corner carries a 32,000-piece puzzle at Iowa City Marketplace, formerly Sycamore Mall, in Iowa City, Iowa, on Monday, Aug. 26, 2019. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
This might be considered more of a sports photo but I took it during a business assignment. I liked the intensity and focus on Kerry Fisher's face. Kerry Fisher (left) of Iowa City, Iowa, connects with a punch mitt worn by instructor IB Funmilayo during a TITLE Boxing class at Thrive Gym in Coralville, Iowa on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019. TITLE Boxing Club Iowa City is merging with Thrive Gym to become a hybrid boxing and fitness facility in one shared space. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
This was a pretty wild assignment. Snooks has such energy and had his own ideas how he wanted to be photographed. I was happy to go along for the ride. I had to check subsequent photos and adjust the cutout of Snooks to reduce the glare coming off the glossy material. Former Marion mayor Allen 'Snooks' Bouska with a cardboard cutout of himself at the Longbranch West Western hotel in Marion, Iowa on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019. Bouska filed to run for president with the federal election commission. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
