Ruth Gertrude Pickart Jacobs, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Services: 10 a.m. Monday, St. Pius X Catholic Church by the Rev. Donald Klein. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service and rosary will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Teahen Funeral Home where friends may visit with the family Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. and Monday at the church after 9 a.m.
Ruth is survived by three daughters, Cheryl (John) King of Independence, Mo., Cynthia Jacobs of Everett, Wash., and Joanne (Don) McCollum of Lee's Summit, Mo.; a son, Bruce (Jessica) Jacobs of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, Karen (Victor) Juliana, Laura (David) Safley, Amy King, Shelby White, Kylie McCollum, Elizabeth (Brendan) Knepper, Benjamin Jacobs, Aubrey White and Hunter McCollum; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Sr. Romaine (Pearl) Pickart, OSF of Dubuque; two brothers, Lyle (Allene) Pickart of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Glenn (Mary) Pickart of St. Petersburg, Fla.; her in-laws, Helen Pickart of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Ruth Marie Pickart of Ames; and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Marlin (Jake) in 1997; three brothers, Clyde, Milton "Chuck" and Joe; and her sister and brother-in-law Hazel and Charlie Dvorak.
Ruth was born Jan. 25, 1921, in Benton County, the daughter of Oscar and Mary Boddicker Pickart. She married Marlin Jacobs on Feb. 9, 1946, in Jacksonville, Fla. Over the years Ruth worked as a waitress in several restaurants, including the Shorewood, Shiloh and Montrose Hotel, and as a clerk at Liggetts-Ford Hopkins Drug Store. She retired in 1984. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and enjoyed being active in church activities, bowling and was an avid reader.
The family appreciates the care and support given to Ruth by the staff of Hospice of Mercy.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Mercy or Camp Courageous.
