Dircks, Herbert William
Herbert William Dircks, 61, of 6205 Hillcrest Rd. SW, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center following a sudden illness. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at John XXIII Catholic Church by Father Dustin Vu. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may visit Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home, Walford, and again Wednesday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Marcia; daughter, Jennifer (Joseph) Reynolds of Rochester, Minn.; son, Jason Dircks of Atlantic City, N.J.; grandchildren, Cyril, Gabrial, Abigal Below and Sophia Reynolds; three brothers, Jerry (Karen) Dircks of Rock Hills, S.C., Thomas (Elise) Dircks of Menominee Falls, Wis., and Greg (Maddie) Dircks of Bakersfield, Calif.; sister, Karlene (Ron) Kruger of Wauwatosa, Wis.; brother-in-law, Leonard Yanecek of Zion, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Mary Ellen Yanecek.
Herbert was born June 27, 1948, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Lewis and Phyllis Campbell Dircks. He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Cadet Drum and Bugle Corps. He graduated from Washington High School in 1967 and received his Associate of Science degree from Kirkwood Community College. Herbert married Marcia Boddicker on Nov. 18, 1967, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Newhall. He graduated from the Government Certified Tool and Die Maker program. Herbert worked at the University of Iowa in the Engineering Department as a design prototype consultant.
Herb enjoyed camping and fishing with his grandchildren. He loved tinkering and troubleshooting on various projects and wouldn't give up until it was fixed.
