CEDAR RAPIDS - A 26-year-old Cedar Rapids man, who wore dark makeup and called himself the 'Cop Goblin” while robbing three banks, pleaded guilty Thursday in Linn County District Court.
Damion Broderick pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree robbery and one count of extortion. He admitted during the plea to robbing U.S. Bank, 2350 Edgewood Road SW, and threatening physical injury to a bank employee on April 28, 2014, and to twice robbing Guaranty Bank, 191 Jacolyn Dr. NW, and threatening two bank employees with serious injury on June 25 and July 7, 2014.
First Assistant Linn County attorney Nick Maybanks said during the robberies Broderick pointed an air pistol at the tellers and demanded money. One of the tellers told investigators the robber called himself 'Cop Goblin” as he ran out of one of the banks. He also attempted to disguise his appearance by wearing dark makeup foundation.
Maybanks said as part of the plea agreement he will ask the sentencing judge to run the robbery charges concurrently and the extortion consecutively to those, for a total of 15 years. Broderick would also have to serve a minimum of seven years before he's eligible for parole.
Broderick's brother Timothy Broderick, 22, of Cedar Rapids, was also convicted in the case for assisting him in the robberies. He pleaded last November to conspiracy to commit a forcible felony. He faces up to 10 years in prison and will be sentenced next week.
