Live Iowa River flood updates, July 3

The Coralville Lake Reservoir is expected to reach 711.3 feet on July 11. The spillway sits at 712 feet.

SANDBAGGING HELP NEEDED: Iowa City is asking for volunteers to help with sandbagging. Call (319) 337-8657. Sandbagging operations will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, July 4 and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 5. Go to the United Way of Johnson & Washington Counties emergency volunteer center. The center is staffed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and is located in the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Building at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, 4265 Oak Crest Hill SE, Iowa City.

Emergency shelters
With homes being evacuated, the American Red Cross serving Greater Iowa is opening an emergency shelter at 5 p.m. at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, 4265 Oak Crest Hill Rd. SE., Iowa City.
United Way of Johnson & Washington Counties activated its Emergency Volunteer Center and Disaster Call Center Wednesday to coordinate volunteers who want to help with flood preparedness or cleanup. Volunteers can sign up at the center, which is in the Iowa State Extension conference Rooms at the county fairgrounds, or get more information by calling (319) 337-8657.

• Iowa City plans to barricade City Park by 1 p.m.

• Temporary flood walls will be installed along the Iowa River behind the Iowa River Power Restaurant
• Sandbagging of individual properties is not necessary
University of Iowa flood preparations
• Flood protections will likely be complete today
• Water and power plants are protected
• 12-foot HESCO wall is being installed around Mayflower Residence Hall
• Flood barriers will be installed around Art Building West
• 4-foot HESCO barriers will be installed along west and east sides of Iowa River bank on campus
• All classes and programs are being held as scheduled
• Those visiting the UI campus are urged to avoid the I-80/Dubuque Street exit (Exit 244)
University of Iowa closures and service changes
• Beckwith Boat House and Mayflower Residence Hall closed
• East and west sidewalks along Iowa River closed
• Northbound lanes of North Dubuque Street closed
• CAMBUS service to Mayflower suspended
• Southbound lane of Riverside Drive (for flood wall installation at Art Building West) closed
• Lot 42 adjacent closed (for flood wall installation at Art Building West). Alternate parking in Hancher lot; College of Public Health access via Ferson Avenue.
• Iowa Memorial Union footbridge closed
• Iowa Memorial Union south metered lot closed
• Hancher footbridge closed
• Motor Pool office relocated to Motor Pool garage, Madison Street
Other new emergency orders
• A boating ban is in effect on the Iowa River below the Coralville Dam
• Boating ban includes boating, canoeing, swimming, wading or any other recreational use of the water
• Those boating should wear life jackets and be aware of debris in the water
• Protect wells on your property by creating a barrier around the well head with sand bags or a berm in a 304 foot radius around the well
• If your well comes into contact with flood waters obtain water from another safe source or use bottled water, do not boil flood-contaminated water
Weekend event changes and cancellations
• Due to saturated ground on the University of Iowa Pentacrest, the Main Stage will be relocated to Dubuque Street near Iowa Avenue, at the same location as the Iowa Arts Festival Main Stage.
• Riverside Theatre has adjusted its weekend plans to due flood projections
• Flooding has not altered plans for Iowa City fireworks. The display is scheduled for Saturday, July 5 as part of the Iowa City Jazz Festival, beginning between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m. from Hubbard Park on Madison Street
