Two attorneys nominated to fill district judge vacancy

Two Iowa City attorneys were selected Wednesday by the 6th Judicial District Nominating Commission as nominees to replace retiring Judge Marsha Beckelman on the bench.

The nominees, Lars Anderson of Iowa City, and Chad Kepros of North Liberty, were forwarded to Gov. Terry Branstad, who will appoint one as the next district judge. Branstad has 30 days to appoint one of the nominees.

Beckelman will retire July 3, after serving 10 years on the bench. The commission interviewed 12 applicants for the impending vacancy Wednesday.

Lars Anderson has been an attorney with Holland and Anderson in Iowa City, for more than 13 years. He was with C. Joseph Holland Law Office in Iowa City, from 1995 to 2000, after receiving his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1995. He received his bachelor's degree from Luther College in 1992.

Anderson practices in the area of real estate, commercial, family, school and employment law. He is the member of the Johnson County Bar and Iowa State Bar Assocation. He also is a member of Dean Mason Ladd American Inn of Court, serving as the president from 2012 to 2013. Anderson has been recognized by the Iowa Supreme Court for pro bono service.

Kepros has been an attorney with Bray and Klockau since 1996 after receiving his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1996. He received his bachelor's degree from Coe College in 1993.

Kepros practices in domestic relations and family law. He has trial and appellate experience and also provides mediation and other alternative dispute resolution services. He is a on the roster of mediators for the 6th Judicial District Family Mediators Program. Kepros is a member of the American Bar Association, Iowa State Bar Association, Johnson County Bar Association and serves on the Iowa Supreme Court Child Support Guidelines Review Committee.
