Prosecutors in the kidnapping trial against a Colorado woman accused of taking her half-sister's baby in the town of Beloit will wrap up their case on Wednesday, and the woman's lawyer will present her defense.
Kristen Smith, 31, of Aurora, Colorado, who is charged with kidnapping 4-day-old Kayden Powell on Feb. 6, has claimed that she had permission from the boy's father to take the infant with her to Colorado.
Smith allegedly took Kayden from her half-sister, Brianna Marshall, and her boyfriend, Bruce Powell, as they slept at Marshall's grandmother's house. Prosecutors allege that when Smith found out police wanted to talk to her about Kayden's disappearance, she left the boy, swaddled in blankets, inside a plastic storage bin next to an Iowa gas station in sub-zero weather.
