Virginia Florence Soukup, 87, of 209 Church St., Fairfax, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, after a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fairfax, by the Rev. Dustin Vu. Burial: Fairfax Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Friday at the church, where friends may visit with the family Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Sat-urday after 9:30 a.m. Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, is serving the family.
Virginia is survived by a daughter, Patricia Soukup, and a son, Alan (Catherine) Soukup, both of Fairfax; three grandchildren, Marcus, Gregory and Aimee; and a sister-in-law, Jean Wortman of Cedar Rapids.
Her husband, Marvin, and brother, George Wortman, preceded her in death.
Virginia was born the daughter of Claude and Aimee Koett Wortman on Oct. 4, 1926, in Marshall-town. She graduated from St. Mary's School in Marshalltown and the Cedar Rapids Business College. She married Marvin Glen Soukup on May 14, 1954, in Brainerd, Minn. He later died in 1970. Virginia served as the city clerk of Fairfax for 20 years before her retirement in 1991. She had served for many years on the finance committee of the church and had achieved the designation of Qualified Master Municipal Clerk.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fairfax, Altar and Rosary Society, American Legion Auxiliary of Post 5, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary of Post 788, Crobowa Chapter of American Business Women, Linn Area Clerks Association, Central Iowa Clerks Association and the Iowa Municipal Finance Officers Association.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
