Gary Gene Moel, 64, passed away after a brief illness on Monday, March 31, 2014, at Mercy Iowa City Hospice, surrounded by his family. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 4, at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Friends and relatives are invited to a time of fellowship following the services at the Solon American Legion. Private family burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by the North Liberty American
Legion, Post 1976. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Solon, located at 100 S. Cedar St.
Gary was born Feb. 16, 1950, to Dean Moel and Betty (Umsted) Moel in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Solon High School, provided service in the Army in Vietnam 1970-71, and worked for 39 years at Hawkeye Food Systems in Coralville, until his retirement in 2011. Gary enjoyed his yearly fishing trips to Canada, tailgating at Hawkeye football games and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
Gary is survived by his
father, Dean Moel of Lisbon; sons,
Eric (Kelly) Moel of Edgington, Ill., and Casey (Joy) Moel of Iowa City; his grandchildren, Ashley, Clay, Isaac, Logan, Brandon, Samuel and Erica; his siblings, Linda (Phil) Shimerda of San Antonio, Texas, Jack (Kris) Moel of Sutliff, Patti (Jerry) Schott of Marion and Mike (Kathy) Moel of Solon; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Lou Moel; and his friend, Donna Brus.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to
Iowa City Hospice.
